THE SHOW

Flutter is an immersive vocal and audio-visual performance by composer and sound artist Deborah Shaw (Aurora Engine) and video artist Mettje Hunneman.

Inspired by Shaw’s lived experience of Tourette’s syndrome, The performance transforms the rhythms and textures of vocal and physical tics into an extraordinary journey through voice, sound and light. Performed by Deborah Shaw, Emma Lloyd and John Hails, the work evolves from fractured vocalisations into rich choral harmonies and immersive electronics, revealing moments of anxiety, vulnerability and ultimately release.

Hunneman’s kinetic light sculpture becomes an active performer, weaving luminous lines that stretch, spin and dissolve in dialogue with the music. Echoing the cycles of tension and release experienced in tics, the sculpture creates a constantly shifting visual landscape that arches above and surrounds the performers, with the audience seated on either side of the performance area.

Together, sound, voice and light invite audiences into a powerful, uplifting experience that celebrates resilience, connection and the transformative potential of sound and singing.

AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE

Immersive installation with live performance

Audience experience
The installation is open 10 minutes before the performance, inviting audiences to move through the space and experience the sculpture, projection and soundscape before taking their seats.

The audience is seated on either side of the performance area, where projections expand across the sculpture and overhead, placing performers and audience within the same visual environment.

Performance duration: 20-40 minutes, including opportunity to remain in the space and meet the artists / Q & A.
